Abundant power for Ghana's new industries An essential pre-requisite to industrialisation is the availability of abundant, cheap power. Therefore the primary objective for the building of the Akosombo Dam is to generate abundant electric power so that Ghana can without too much difficulty advance her industrialisation programme. Now endowed with this great source of cheap power, new industries can rest assured of a plentiful supply of power. The major customers of the Volta River Authority are the Volta Aluminium Company - VALCO - who are running the aluminium smelter at Tema; the mines at Tarkwa, Dunkwa, Prestea and Akwatia, and the electricity division of the Works and Housing Ministry. Power is picked up from transmission sites all over the country. New deposits Ghana's mining industry can look ahead to a better future with the discovery of several new gold-bearing ore deposits. At Nsuta, near the Western port of Takoradi, substantial high-quality manganese deposits occur, in addition to lower grade ore in enormous quantities at Yakau and several other places. With the development of electrolytic manganese processing, the production of dry cell batteries, welding rods, dyes, etc. is to be carried on a large scale. Diamond mining is concentrated in one large foreign holding, the Consolidated African Selection Trust (CAST). In Eastern Ghana a major portion of the Birim River is known to be diamond-bearing. Estimates are that exploitation in the area could yield an increase of 60 per cent on present production. Bauxite has become the most important mineral resource in Ghana. At Kibi, capital of Akyem Abuakwa, 60 million tons of ore are known to exist. In May 1968 plans were announced of a one million new cedis cable and wire factory to be established at Tema, for the manufacture of insulated and non-insulated electrical cables, wires and other allied products. This is a joint venture between the National Investment Bank and Kabelmetal Co. of Hanover in West Germany. Another sound achievement is the NC 3-4 million Ghana Cement factory in Takoradi which has a production capacity of 500,000 tons of cement a year. It was built by Cekop Bu-mex of Poland, and is owned jointly by the Government of Ghana (75 per cent of the shares) and the Norway Cement Export Limited. This new endeavour is more than a wise step, bearing in mind that over 500 million tons of limestone deposits are lying about 400 feet below the surface at Nauli, also in the Western Region. Ghanaians can therefore heave a sigh of relief that in the very near future Ghana will produce her own cement at a cheaper cost, we hope—and thus save foreign exchange. Fast-developing There is no doubt that the most fast-developing industry is in the garment sector. From a very humble beginning this industry has developed into great dimensions. Names such as Glamour Garment Factory, Intra Knitting Works, Metropolital Industries, Kamal Garment Factory and Mayfair Garment Factory, have all now become very well known. Perhaps the most modern among them all is Unitex Industries Ltd., a joint partnership venture between Lebanese and Ghanaians, who are not only out to satisfy Ghana's needs from the works of this one million new cedis factory but who, with planning foresight, have also taken steps to own a ten-acre cotton farm in the Ho district of the Volta Region the factory.
